Living with Crohn's

Diet

Your goal as a Crohn's patient should be to minimize the severity of symptoms and, if possible, put your disease into remission and keep it there.  One tool in your arsenal is to create a tailor-made diet especially for you.  No two Crohn's Disease patients are exactly alike, so this is going to take a little time and effort on your part.  Keeping an up to date food diary is the best way to create a diet appropriate for yourself.  Every time that you eat, create an entry for the day and time of your meal.  In your food diary list every type of food and approximate quantity that you consumed.  After you have eaten, wait thirty minutes to an hour, then finish your entry by noting how you feel, are you having pains, gas, or diarrea?

Over time you will be able to figure out what foods make your symptoms worse and the foods that are fine for you to eat.  Usually, foods that make your symptoms worse would also be more likely to create flares once you have achieved remission.  Also, the size of portions may matter, so it could be beneficial to eat more meals and smaller portions.  Each person is different but some potential problem foods are the following:
  • alcohol
  • chocolate
  • fried foods
  • nuts and seeds
  • high fiber foods
  • raw fruits & vegetables
  • spicy foods
  • coffee and tea
  • butter and oils
  • pork and red meats
  • carbonated beverages
  • dairy if lactose intolerant
