Living with Crohn's

Exercise

It is important for Crohn's Disease sufferers to routinely exercise when possible.  There may be times when physical exercise is not feasible depending on the severity of your symptoms.  Even during flares, if feasible, mild physical exercise can be helpful in reducing stress, releasing endorphines throughout the body relieving pain, and if done properly reduce inflammation.

Please note that exercising to the point of exhaustion or very strenuous exercise such as weight lifting may increase inflammation.  Mild exercise such as yoga, walking or jogging, however, has been shown to have a small anti-inflammatory effect.  Once your Crohn's Disease is in remission, moderate to exhaustive routine exercise is fine and encouraged.

Aside from physical exercise, spiritual and/or mental exercise can be very beneficial to Crohn's sufferers as well in the form of prayer and worship, meditation, and techniques involving positive thinking as well as visualizing one's own future good health.  The mind is a very powerful tool in times of good health and bad, do not underestimate the ability to improve or degrade your own health depending on how you view yourself and your disease.  Staying upbeat in the face of adversity can see you through the darkest of times.
