Friends & Family Living with Crohn's Friends & Family If you have been recently diagnosed with Crohn's Disease you may have not felt like doing much of anything or speaking to anyone. This is normal human behavior, we tend to crawl into a shell anytime we encounter some sort of a setback in life. Something to keep in mind is that your friends and family are a very important part of managing your Crohn's Disease as well. Whenever we visit with friends or family we tend to take our mind off of ourselves and focus on what the other party has to say. This is key because communicating with loved ones can take your mind off of your situation and your disease. This can lower your overall stress and anxiety, and can relieve some of your symptoms. It is also good to know that someone can empathize with us during trying times. Be careful not to seek pity or indulge in self-loathing by constantly talking about your Crohn's Disease because this can defeat the goal of taking your mind off of your pain or fears that you may be experiencing. While it can be good to confront or discuss our fears at times or how we are feeling, you should not make a habit of it. It is also constructive for friends or family members to educate themselves about Crohn's Disease. While they may not feel what you feel, they can at least understand what symptoms you experience, different procedures or tests you may go through, and medicines you may take. The simple act of learning about Crohn's Disease shows that they care. created April 1, 2011 last updated January 1, 2012 |
