Living with Crohn's

Travel

A common concern among Crohn's Disease sufferers is travel, whether it be for business or pleasure.  Do not let Crohn's Disease hold you back from being successful in the workplace or from enjoying life to the fullest.  Your Crohn's Disease can be managed on the road just as well as at home, but you may need to take some extra precautions and do a little planning before leaving.

  • You will want to locate a gastroenterologist in the area you will be traveling to in case you need medical attention while away from home.
  • Ensure that you refill all your prescriptions before leaving home, it can be complicated refilling prescriptions while out of the country.  Also, carry your medications in their original containers in case authorities question what they are used for?
  • Take copies of your prescriptions with you just in case you do have to fill one away from home.
  • Make sure that your health insurance covers foreign travel.
  • Create a plan of action with your doctor in case a medical emergency does occur.
  • Keep your doctor's phone number and your insurance card in your wallet.
  • Make sure that any airplanes, buses, or trains that you are going to travel on have toliets on them, and sit on an aisle seat whenever possible.
  • Take snacks with you so you can stick to your normal eating habits if you eat many small meals throughout the day.
