Do your best to avoid travelers diarrea as this could really affect your Crohn's Disease. While traveling outside the U.S.

  • Do not drink or use tap water without boiling first, or consume any beverages that are not bottled.
  • Do not eat ice or ice cream, raw vegetables or salads, raw or uncooked meat or fish.  Avoid other prepared foods that do not require cooking.
  • Never eat from food vendor carts, and always peel your own fruit.
  • Do not consume uncooked dairy products unless it has been pasteurized and do not eat food that has been allowed to reach room temperature.

If you find yourself with traveler's diarrea here are some tips to manage it:

  • Drink plenty of fluids, preferably luke warm water or luke warm sports drinks like Gatorade and Powerade; make sure you are boiling your water first or drinking bottled water.
  • Consume extra salt to avoid dehydration.
  • Immodium and Pepto Bismal may help but consult your physician first.  It is possible that anti-diarrea medicine may prevent your prescription Crohn's Diseasemedications from working properly.
  • If you have bloody diarreah, dizziness, severe abdominal pain, extremely concentrated urine, or high fever or shaking chills then see a physician immediately.
